The valley of Oakland lies along a curve of the Ramapo River, sheltered on each side by the foothills of the Ramapo and Watchung Mountains. Originally, the Minis Indians, a tribe of the Lenni-Lenape, lived along the river. The Indians lived here until the end of the 17th century. Purchases made by the colonists in 1695 and 1709 began the development of the valley by Dutch farmers. The borough of Oakland is located in western Bergen County, NJ, and is approximately 20 miles from NYC. Occupying 8.60 square miles, almost one-third of Oakland's area is located in the Ramapo Mountains. This area is mostly undeveloped, used primarily for recreation and education.
